StrongArm CIO Michael Spinelli Joins NSC’s Advisory Council

StrongArm’s Chief Innovation Officer, Michael Spinelli, was selected as a member of the National Safety Council’s (NSC) recently established Advisory Council

‍The National Safety Council is America’s leading nonprofit safety advocate, a mission-based organization constantly working to eliminate the leading causes of preventable death and injury. They focus their efforts on the workplace, roadway and impairment, striving to create a culture of safety to keep people safer not only at work, but also beyond the workplace.

‍For example, NSC leads a number of renowned training programs focused on workplace safety and more, going beyond the basics of OSHA compliance regulations to include the global best practices of eliminating injuries and death. They believe workplace safety culture begins with a well-trained workforce, so employees trained in these programs can make their workplaces safer for everyone.

‍The advisory council brings together a number of cross-industry experts in safety and health, ergonomics and innovation, with other corporations and researchers to review and research the most promising approaches to preventing the most common workplace injury, musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).

‍Additionally, it intends to scale the results as part of their larger effort to prevent MSDs across a variety of industries.

According to Safety + Health Magazine, a NSC publication, this means the advisory council will support the work of their ergonomics program in three ways:

  1. Assist in practice, guidance and research efforts by providing expertise, insight, resources and access to networks that may enrich the body of knowledge.
  2. Activate the program’s work through participation, insight and philanthropic support, including judging of innovation challenges and hackathons as well as grant applications.
  3. Amplify the program’s influence and voice, including communication, advocacy, positioning and policy efforts.

From April 11-14, NSC hosted a Work to Zero Summit in Louisville, KY, exhibiting the latest and greatest research and technology dedicated to eliminating injuries and fatalities in the workplace. Here, Spinelli moderated a working session on machine learning and AI applications in safety, attended by a combination of industry safety professionals and technology vendors to discuss how to build and deploy AI systems successfully to improve workplace safety.
